OK I haven't tried this yet (waiting on parts), but I need to install both 98 and XP on the same system, and then almost immediately remove XP (the reason for this is that I need 98 for gaming, but I need to transfer files from a USB 2.0 250GB external HD to the 98 partition, which apparently 98 does not support. So I need to install XP as FAT, transfer the files there, then go into 98 and copy the files from the XP partition).

So, after I remove XP, will 98 be able to boot up fine, or the fact that the XP bootloader is gone mess everything up and I won't be able to boot? And if so, how would I fix that?

Mabye it's only NTFS on that externatl HDD is making problems? You could try NFTS driver from Paragon Software. It's free. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-win98/

Well like I said I haven't even tried it yet. Maybe it will work, but I doubt it. I already formatted the drive to FAT32, not NTFS anyway.

I just read online that 98 doesn't support USB 2.0 as well as hard drives larger than 137GB

Well in that case:
1) Check on UltimateCD - I'm 99% sure that you will find there tool to copy files between external USB and internal FAT32 drive
2) You could check trial versions of backup software: can recommend TeraByte Image for DOS/Image for Windows. It will allow you to backup folders you need, create bootable CD with USB support and restore those files on internal HDD
3) If you can still manipulate partitions od target/source drivers you could also create FAT32 partition on external HDD drive, transfer required files there, image that partition and than restore this image to destination partition on internal HDD. Again I can recommend TeraByte BING.
A dual boot Win98 / Win XP is not difficult to set up ( create one partition for each OS, install WIN 98 on one, then XP on the second, without overwriting of course ). Each OS will then have its own Master Boot Record.

THe tricky issue with what you intend to do is that you then want to remove XP... I never tried that but I suspect it will screw your bootloader...

If you don't need XP, you could simply try to first configure the computer under XP, with two partitions, one for XP, one for data, then transfer your files on that data partition, reformat the XP OS partition and install 98 as OS ?

Sorry was a little quick on the solved.

First, for number 1, it looks like it's DOS based. If so, that also wouldn't work since DOS also won't be able to support USB 2.0, no?

And for number 3. I could create an image of the drive on another computer, sure, but then how would I transfer the image to the internal hard drive? I'm back at square one :p

Ahh yes, that sounds like the easiest way to do this

Ubuntu Live CD, mount the external drive, copy to internal drive; simple, fast, clean.
@RUSBoris
Yes, I also think you should test it first.

Yes it looks DOS-like but those tools are perrty modern (with USB support) and as I said on 99% you will find there tool to copy files between internal HDD and external USB drive.

For number 3:
Download BING.
Create BING boot CD and create separate partition on USB external drive (you can split existing one) - so you will have XPData, 98Data
Transfer required files on that 98Data partition
Again to BootCD
Image partition with 98Data to a file on XPData
Than plug USB drive to Win98Target PC, boot from CD and restore file to target internal HDD

Much easier is to use backup software I mentioned as you don't have to play with partitions.
