Well not really the most value for money, I think that would have to go to Sword of the Stars, but Starscape is a great game that is now on sale at Impulse too.
No joke. Starscape is boatloads of fun. I would say it's more like...Space Rangers lite. Actually, I would describe it as a blend between Space Rangers and Star Control 2. There's a demo that you guys can try out first, if you don't want to pay $10 without knowing what it's like. But this game is good, and for USD10, it's a steal.

It's 12 megabytes? Are you serious?

You scare me sometimes. I suspect you hit F5 every 3 seconds, twenty four hours a day.
Regarding that question: Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm?

It scares me sometimes too. I often just randomly visit the forums and BEWM! I see a new thread to reply to with my excess knowledge.
looks interesting but it'd have to be cheaper than $10 to get me to bite
and that file size looks a bit off
Some of the Popcap stuff still costs $19.99 - is 20-30 megabytes in size, and boatloads of fun.
It probably would have been better to post this earlier, since it's no longer on sale. I might have been interested at $10, but I'm not interested enough to buy it for $20.
Ah. I thought it was under the Cyber Monday sale too, but it seems like it's only covered until the end of the previous weekend sale. Oh well.
Starscape is fun, but the replay value isn't all that good (unless you like mindless survival modes). It is a lot like Freelancer in that regard: Amazing ride while it lasts, but you probably won't be replaying the core campaign very often.
10 dollars sounded reasonable, but I would say 5-9 would be more appropriate.
And the only things it has in common with Space Rangers are the top-down perspective and the whole "Set in space" thing. It is much more a mixture of Asteroids and games like Crimsonland.
Well, I guess it is a lot like a more in-depth version of the SR2 hyperspace battles. But when I think "Space Rangers", I think about the rpg/text adventure nature of it.
Hmm the price appears to have doubled overnight :(
Sword of the Stars is a great 4x space game. Is it as deep as some, no, not by a long shot. But what it does offer is fun game play, very good AI enough control over empire elements to keep most people satisfied, and the very nice graphics that are a blast to watch as your ships battle it out. Plus all the races and how they play compared to one another.
You can get the same item(s) at GamersGate and not have to have loader software.
Here is GG page showing all SotS items
Personally, I own everything on Disk, except Argos Naval Yard since it was never produced on disk. I got it through GG and it works great with my disk based version of the game.
For those that love/like/tolerate Steam, Starscape is $10 over there still.
Didn't know the Swords games were 4x style. May have to have a look at them now.

:P
It's back down to $10 for the weekend impulse sale.
That's awesome :D
