I think every local freecycle system uses their own system. The one here uses Yahoo Groups - which means you can either few it online or get e-mails. And there's no discussion really - you just e-mail those offering or requesting directly.
And damn it, it's still a great idea :). I gave away loads and got real useful things of it, as well.

Unfortunately this will be less of an option as more publishers persue the digital download only option. Yeah, it's still a pretty good ways off, but it's coming fast.
Until then though, I definitely agree with you.

Let's see... I replaced all the lights except one in my house with compact flourescent bulbs (the one is on a dimmer switch and I have yet to find a dimmable CF bulb)... I use a programmable thermostat and don't set the temp above 67 degrees (during the winter it is allowed to go as low as 62 degrees)... I recycle ridiculously and most of what I can't recycle gets composted (I have maybe 1 bag of actual trash every week, usually half a bag)... I have kept the same computer for almost 6 years and have upgraded it as needed instead of replacing it. Any replaced parts end up in other computers or donated... I use Freecycle whenever I can... This summer I am looking into getting rain collection barrels to supply water for my (mostly) organic garden...
I think that's about it for now. Eventually I do want to get a plugin-in electric car and charge it using a wind turbine, but they are way too expensive at the moment.

But being excessive is part of what got us here in the first place. :P

Digital downloads save trees though, and cancels out cost-wise as it saves publishers money.

Unfortunately, other than weekend deals (Steam, Impulse, etc) and GOG regular pricing, the customer usually doesn't benefit from losing "ownership"/resale rights. Let's hope this changes as digital download becomes the only option as time goes by.
