Dragon Age: Origins will only include the most basic of disc checks and no SecuROM!
That is a great news and great move from EA. I didn't expect this and this is a must buy game for me now.

It's good to see that the industry's major publisher is moving a little bit in the right direction, but theres still a long way to go.
I for one won't be buying Dragon Age, due to the fact that I don't know yet how much influence the consoles will have on the pc version, will it be a port or not? and how deep rpg gameplay is on offer?
Theres just too many variables, but it's good that the invasive drm has been removed.
I am very much relieved.
I'm really looking forward to Dragon Age, and was hoping they wouldn't put dodgy DRM on it, mostly because I'd probably have bought it anyway.
Perhaps developers/publishers are starting to get the right idea?
Are you fucking serious? Wow. I'm simply amazed to such an extent that I might actually get this game. Great news.
EDIT:
And not even Securom disc check?!?!? Holy dicking fuck!

:D !!!!!!!!!
Now I'm truly excited!
This is great, although I was happy that Mass Effect didn't require the CD in the drive as well (even if it was a side effect of online checking).
I am sure to buy this as soon as possible, though I hope there's a copy left of the collector's edition when I have enough money to spend.
But what disk check system is it using? Just because they aren't using SecuROM for the disk check doesn't mean they are also not using Starforce or Tages or something worse. Also note that he specifically mentions that this will only apply to copies distributed by EA or BioWare, who knows what will happen with copies distributed by other sources.
Only CD Check like older games or Oblivion.

acare84: Only CD Check like older games or Oblivion.

The CD check built into many older games was actually SecuROM or other copy protection schemes like SafeDisk, Starforce, Tages, etc. We know they aren't using SecuROM's disk check system, but what system are they using, if any?
Holy shit. Didnt see this coming at ALL.
Buying this now. Wasnt sure if it was my thing or not before, but at this point I dont even care. :)
I want to know what the difference will be between this
"...the retail PC version of the game won’t require you to go online to authenticate the game for offline play,"
And this
"We’ll also be supporting the game with a ton of great downloadable content that will be available for purchase after the game’s release. Together these features will provide some very cool reasons to go online with Dragon Age: Origins."
Does it mean that you have to register to go online and buy stuff for your offline game?

It'll probably be like it was with Mass Effect (registration/serial, I think it was), which I have no problem with at all.

Well that's a good news, I can live with a standard CD-check.

Hah, probably. Now that they don't spew DRM like shit all over the place, they've started to focus in DLCs instead (not that it's a new thing). A better course of action than DRM, but probably won't have anything worth buying anyway.

This makes me a bit worried. I can't help but wonder what kind of "online authentication... but not online authentication" doublespeak they might be thinking up. The fact that the game's release is still quite a ways off and already they're talking about nickle-and-diming customers with DLC also isn't particularly promising. Well, ultimately this PR release hasn't changed anything; I'll still be waiting to see what the actual deal is once the game is released, and make my purchasing decision at that time.
