Some of us wouldn't want to support Beamdog, like me (Their treatment of Apple consumers is apalling and, truth to be told, I found the EEs extremely underwhelming, definitely not worth the additional tenner when placed next to the original)

I do not want to support this company, and now I am all but forced to do so.
Why was this decision made?

Beamdog has the rights. So naturally, they are making you pay more for what you want. As a consumer, you have to make a decision about if you do or do not want to support them in this move.

Edit: I'm wrong. It wasn't Beamdog, it is GOG. Why is GOG the bad guy almost always lately?

The sad and honest truth is as Tallima stated, however a bright spot is the orginals are included with the purchase, so there is the bright side to the hell cloud that are the EE's but thats up to you to decide if its worth the price of admission.
Really feel sorry for the people that missed the DnD game bundles from before Beamdog did their stuff.

Are you looking to obtain the originals? If so, I believe there are plenty of us around with an extra key for BG1 and BG2.

I remember hearing somewhere on this forum that, at least in the case of Planescape Torment, removing the original game was GOG's decision.

EDIT: Here's the source of that, if I'm not mistaken:

Because of the large piles of cash beamdog need to finance their constant holidays in Barbados. Don't worry though, neverwinter nights is next up of the cash cow train, and judging by the way things have gone the original won't be available at all this time, enhancement!!!

Except, of course, for the fact that Beamdog doesn't have the rights to the originals. Hasbro does.
If Hasbro has the rights it makes it even more confusing.

To me, Beamdog is clearly just making cashgrabs here (Like separating the OST from the actual game? Seriously? That is just... Horse Armor DLC scumbag levels), and I refuse to back that.
A great moment for my PS:T cd3 to break. Now I need to either do piracy, or support a company I dislike.
I hate both options.
Hasbro owns the games, but Beamdog has a deal with Hasbor to bring out the Enhanced editions. Pretty sure the agreement limits distribution of the oriiginals as a "bonus" to buyers of the EE.

You have opened my eyes. Thank you.

I'm not against the EEs. I own them. They're good. But, as so many have said, are a bit buggy and perhaps don't do enough of a change to the originals, or a good enough change to the originals, to be worthwhile. Nonetheless, I like them, okay them, enjoy them, and can't play multi-player more than a few minutes without getting dropped and have seen animations play backwards and inside out.

Speaking for myself - and possibly many others here - if you have the legally-acquired original disks then you have the license. "Pirating" the game in this case simply means you're reacquiring the files so you can exercise that license. So far as I know (which means I don't know at all), a game license doesn't expire when the disks go bad.

FWIW, I recall reading a later and better sourced post that completely refuted that one. I don't remember which forum it was in though.

Yeah, if not for the EE, then I'd bought Baldur Gates. This way I'm waiting for... I don't know, I probably never buy them now.
