I'm not completely opposed to the mystery-box mechanic, and they are priced pretty well, BUT it doesn't matter that they won't give you dupes for things you already own if you can't mark other games as "Already owned" on other platforms. Yes, I get that this could be abused to tweak drop odds, but I own 427 games on Steam in addition to having accounts with uPlay, Origin, Itch.io, etc. etc. If I can't avoid dupes for games I own outside of GOG, there is no way this will ever appeal to me.

Don't get me wrong; I appreciate the lengths to which GOG goes to be a more open platform, including their addition of Steam games to your GOG account, but adding an "Already Owned" button to the store pages would go a long way.

Alternately, listing the pool of games that are potentially in a box would help narrow down whether or not I think it's worth it to pick one up.

They could even integrate the connection they already have for GOG Connect - since they know what games you have on Steam (if you have connected your Steam account), they could automagically (as far as we customers are concerned) mark those with an icon for "Owned on Steam", and have an option to treat such games as owned for mystery-boxes. That wouldn't solve other platforms where they don't have this connection system, but would be less susceptible to misuse than "I'll just mark everything I don't want as already-owned-elsewhere".

I didn't even consider this until you wrote it, but now that you did, yeah, I can't see that working out. The temptation to abuse this system in order to avoid getting "stinkers" and approving your chances for the few really good deals would be just too high, even though that sucks for those who own many games elsewhere. :/

Anyway, this thread should give you an idea about what to expect.

Thats'a good point though.

CthulhuCalamari: *snip*
Maybe posting this in the sale thread which is being monitored by staff would have been a better idea instead of starting a new thread:

https://www.gog.com/forum/general/the_st_patricks_day_sale_begins_on_gogcom_26259

Like most internet support forums, this one is customer driven with little to no staff involvement. That thread appears to be monitored as staff has posted there a couple of times now.

As t a list of what's included, here you go:

https://www.gog.com/forum/general/what_mystery_game_did_you_get_from_the_hat/post45

Hope this helps

If you get one you already have elsewhere you can get a refund just fine by contacting GOG support, no questions asked as long as you don't download the game first.
My reason for not buying any mystery games would be that i could get a game that wouldn't work on my pc system win xp.
Buy a game you want

Buy a totaly random game

Damn, this is a hard choice :P
Well, I guess it's time for this thread. Again.
For me it's the fact that I pretty much own them all already.

From the list of this sale I see Yono and Urban Empire, aside from that it's some adventure games (that I really don't like as a genre with only a few exceptions) and lesser versions of games I own where I'm paranoid I'd get the same game I already have but with less content because it's "different" than the upgraded edition I bought.
My popcorn is ready ;).Cheers

I'm just opposed to the mystery-box mechanic. That's why I NEVER buy the "hats", "pinatas", ...

I guess the chance that I may get a game that I didn't know of but is good is much, much less than the risk of getting a game that I don't want to play at all. What I would need is just the ability to try out a game for a short period without payment or for only very small payment. Like pay $1 for playing a game for 1 hour and get $1 discount on the price of the game if you want to keep it afterwards or so. The only problem is that one might need some sort of DRM for it. But I'm actually happy the way it is and I don't want or need to buy mystery games for it. I just don't care about it.

You could do both. Or wait, It's a trap. Do neither.

Yeah sorry but this whole mystery game thing is the dumbest idea since three wheeled cars.

Yeah, what a stupid idea

Loot boxes are shitty regardless. Not technically gambling since you always get something, even if that something is worth next to nothing for you. But hey, that something is assigned a value of at least the cost of the box, so you always win, see?!

I'm not even sure if that is the case. It might be that if you own the normal edition+upgrade, you could still win the combined version in the mystery box as they are tracked separately..

You always win with three wheeled cars. Got it. ;)
