Breja: So... what exactly is the problem?

timppu: Fortnite is not bringing in as much money as before, and all parts of Epic have been very much dependent on that money.

It also mentions other plans beyond making games and game engines and running the store, with which the rest of the gaming industry (publishers and developers) don't necessarily agree with. Didn't just important guy just leave Epic, stating Epic is becoming something like "Epic Platform 5.0" and he doesn't feel he wants to be part of that? Maybe it is that "metaverse" thing they mention in the article?

Everyone wants to rule the world, Facebook tried their metaverse as well.

Is it too late for CDPR to go back using RedEngine? :)
Yeah, I forgot to mention that in my part, thanks! Unreal Engine basically taking over the industry (split with Unity) is a major issue. Epic's going to be looking to squeeze that, and with Unity having recently gone to shit, Epic has a lot of room to go to shit with all sorts of demands for using their engine that the industry has largely become reliant on.

Chinese ownership: Apparently Tencent (which also owns many other things, including a major component of Ubisoft as well) still has 40%ish ownership of Epic, but has been having economic and vitality issues itself (as has the Chinese nation in general).

karnak1: 100% This that Breja wrote! ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^

Call me a "grumpy old fart" , if you will, but the older I get the more I feel that gamers - more than developers and publishers - are to blame for the sad state the video-game industry has turned into.

Sure... A company may decide to stupid and questionable things related to games (and CDP is no exception). But consumers always vote with their wallets.
If McDonalds or Burger King suddenly decided to state they'd start selling burgers made of human feces, it was on the consumers whether they'd keep buying there or they'd have to close shop.

But when I look around and see gamers praising the state of "Star Citizen" or people indifferent to the fact that Ubisoft suddenly installed Denuvo on the latest Assassin's Creed game... Well, call me an elitist, but I think there are too many "wrong people" playing videogames and making the industry go the wrong path.
Breja and karnak1 make great points.

timppu: The main problem is that EGS doesn't seem to really offer anything making it special over Steam. It is basically another Steam, trying to compete with Steam. Epic sure offers freebies
That third quoted sentence contradicts the first two.

EGS offers a high quantity of free games, and sometimes those free games are top tier high quality titles, both of which are things about which Steam & GOG are far less generous and rarely do (GOG offers a somewhat large amount of free games during major sales, but they are usually low quality cheap indie games, and almost never top tier high quality games).

EGS also mandated that all games on EGS that have multiplayer must feature Crossplay with the other platforms that those same games are also on, which is great for gamers, and something that neither Steam nor GOG set as a mandatory requirement to help their customers have an enjoyable multiplayer experience, because Steam & GOG don't care.

Another thing EGS does better than Steam and GOG is to take only a 12% cut from the publishers/devs, instead of Steam and GOG which both take a much higher 30%.

Offering games for free isn't really a viable business model in the long run, so you can't expect it to be the norm for Epic also in the future.

So, as a viable store, EGS doesn't really offer anything over Steam at least for the end-customer, as far as I can tell. Maybe for developers they offer some perks if they also use the Unreal engine etc.

That is not a "feature" that sets EGS apart from e.g. Steam. It is simply their pricing model they use at the moment. It might change quite soon as Fortnite hasn't been such a cashcow lately as it used to be. Maybe people are just getting fed up with it or something, or at least paying for it, maybe because the economy is bad and people don't want to use money on microtransactions anymore.

I found Tim Sweeney! He's on the list.
Responsible for this.
Our .exe works on XP all right. We have Jill Tim! Release Unreal!

Must say I don't understand "wrong people" part, if anything today there is more diverse range of gamers than ever, and we never had more independent/niche game developers. Of course, AAA is, and always was, a different kind of beast, but AAA is not everything there is in gaming... But anyways, I'm curious, what would be "the right path" as opposed to "wrong path" you mentioned?

What list? That link leads to a 404.
