Up to 90% off several camo-painted gems: Men of War series, Commandos, Xenonauts, Cannon Fodder, and more!

Attennnnn-tion! Delta Force deployed all over GOG.com today and we need to show these tough guys that we're combat ready. This is not a drill, everyone! Right now we've put a discount on several of our finest military units and they're over there, standing in line and ready for inspection. Be sure to come and check if they are indeed fit to be In the Army.

These lads are not called Men of War, for no reason. They've fought in both WWII and Vietnam, earning their place in history by completing mission after mission full of grueling RTS challenges. Their individual skills were quite impressive, but it was the tactical genius displayed by their commander that made all the difference.

How are you supposed to fight an enemy that is completely alien to you? The Xenonauts know how: with methodical turn-based tactics, arduous research of advanced technology, and carefully planned assaults. It's not easy, but it's the only way to reclaim the planet from those damn extraterrestrials.

Fight alongside the brave lads waiting inside our special In the Army sale, which also features the Commandos games, Cannon Fodder 1 & 2, Faces of War, and more up to 90% off!

The sale will last until March 26, 11 PM UTC.
Has anyone played that "Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord" game? Is it similar to Panzer Elite?

deja65: ... they are very enjoyable and really unique(similar to the first Desperados game which is also here on GOG ;)).Cheers
Wanted to buy that Desperados game once but skipped because of this.

Also some posts on steam forums claim that things like changing the name of the executables or enabling compatibility mode helps. Are those informations real??

EDIT: Just saw that it was discussed just a while back. Didn't notice while posting. :p
(What is this phenomena called in the forums?)

deja65: Yes, that is correct.Renaming the executable fixes the games to some extent, but other issue like screen flickering, low fps or even complete freezes or CTD's can only be fixed with wrappers ;).Cheers
That awkward moment when Linux with its Wine layer becomes better Windows than Windows itself o.O

I can see that advice more and more often - if you want to play some good old games, you should consider installing Linux next to your Windows (today it's about 15 minutes of simple and easy wizard) and run in there, under Wine.
Which of the Men of War games are best?
Weird that Army Men is neither available as a bundle any more nor part of this special.
Commandos series @85% off.
Not bad.

bhrigu: Games of Commandos series, as per the information on their store pages, don't support Win10.
Can anyone confirm this (or the contrary) info?

Have a nice day!
You can always try to run these games with the help of dgVoodo:

CURSE YOU GOG and German government.

I already own Commandos & Commando's Behind Enemy Lines on here. I WANT to buy Commands 2 & 3 at that ridiculous discount but you don't/can't sell the game here in Germany, and I can't find it on the site even going through my UK VPN (I am British, I have a valid UK credit card and bank account, I just happen to live in Germany right now)

GGGRRRRRRRR.
Stand at ease!
Of course this belongs to here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiTL7FXAtmw

IronArcturus: Has anyone played that "Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord" game? Is it similar to Panzer Elite?
Yes I played it *a lot* when it first came out and loved it - I'd say it's probably one of my top three games of all time.
It's very dated graphically but the gameplay is still terrific and the graphics do the job, especially if you substitute some 3rd party texture packs. There are later games in the series which improve on some aspects but this first one always seemed to me to be the most fun to play.

I've also played Panzer Elite and really loved that at first but after a fairly short while it ran out of replayability for me.

Are the games similar? No, not at all really, apart from being set in WW2 and both attempting to be realistic in their own ways. Where PE is realtime and you are actually driving a tank, CMBO is turn based and you are giving orders to a number of vehicles and squads that will then act on them.

The turn based system in CMBO is brilliantly done - you spend as long as you like setting up your orders, then your opponent (or AI) will do the same (all based on what you each can see at that point - so line-of-sight and scouting are *really* important).

Once both sides have decided on their intended moves, the game creates a replayable "movie" (still within the 3D game engine) of that one minute turn, where everything happens simultaneously but you can rewind and rerun the playback to your heart's content, moving the camera around the battle map - so unlike RTS games you never miss any of the action just because your attention has to be elsewhere at that moment.

In a typical move your infantry might carefully move forward across a seemingly empty field but suddenly be blasted with mortar and MG fire from the hedge line, while your tanks are bound to blunder straight into the enemies carefully laid trap, with a sudden hail of AT gun shells that may ricochet off your tanks or more likely knock out half your best vehicles, leaving burning wrecks strewn in their wake.

If you like tactical wargames and want something that is both realistic but also captures the imagination a lot better than the more abstract top down, turn based games (like Battle Academy - which I also highly recommend) then CMBO is well worth your money. Note that if you are more interested in the Eastern theatre then you might prefer "CM Barbarossa to Berlin" but I favour late war Western Europe myself, so for me CMBO is perfectly placed.

Hope that helps.

PS. Have a look at the original release reviews on Amazon (when it was just plain "Combat Mission") https://www.amazon.co.uk/CDV-Software-Entertainment-Combat-Mission/dp/B000079DNT
some useful info there and a review by me from 2002!

Thanks for the info!
Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord is still rated garbage on WineHQ with Wine 1.9.22. Has anyone tried it with a newer Wine version?
