Sometimes by losing a battle you find a new way to win the war.

March onto the real-time 3D battlefield in the strategic, tabletop-inspired title, <span class="bold">Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat, now available for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Jump into the fantasy tabletop world of Warhammer Fantasy from Games Workshop in Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat and take control of a small army. You will have to manage your forces and weigh your strengths and weaknesses wisely to extend your influence, expand your treasury, and enlist new recruits to see your army grow. Choose your battles carefully, as your moves will affect your in-game future. If you are up to the challenge of a highly difficult and tactically demanding strategy, Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat is for you, but be warned: your patience will be tested with the defeats you are due to face on your way to victory. The game’s combat system got many a word of praise, but do not be fooled - it does not come at the expense of character development, plot, or animation, and the music is astounding. All features of the title come together to truly bring the Warhammer Fantasy tabletop classic to life.

<span class="bold">Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat is DRM-free at GOG.com. If tactically challenging strategies are your thing, make sure to give this one a try.

tburger: Great game..One of the best I've ever played. And the manual is a masterpiece
Sucks the manual isn't listed in the extras :(

Now that's a pleasant surprise! Hard, but excellent game with very unique atmosphere and interesting setting. I liked it so much that I even started to read the novels from Warhammer universe. Let's hope that Dark Omen (probable) and Mark of Chaos (alas, improbable) make it here too.
I don't know about this one, however. :O
Is it good or average?

Its good. Every regiment is unique and has their own history, carrying across each fight with their casualties (its not always about winning so much as keeping your mercenary army intact) and can permanently die. The story goes through a variety of Warhammer fantasy locations such as Black Fire Pass and the ancient Dwarven hold of Zhufbar, cutscenes are fully voiced, Gotrek shows up, its got a great flavour. Helps to know a bit about the setting though and can be quite difficult.

jamotide: What is so good about it?
Excellent story, voiceovers and music. Very good 2D graphics (3D battle gfx is ...well..medicore). The in game warhemmer o'pedia gives you detailed story and description about units, heros, magic items, races etc. The battles are great: it REALLY matters what formation you choose, what unit you are attacking with, unit's morale, charging flanks or from the back etc. It's not enough to win the battle - you have to win it with minimal casaulties coz replacements are scarse. Magic is powerful but thanks to wings of magic - it's random, unpredictible. The only drawback I can think of is that you cannot swap magic items between units.

The manual is also great and gives you a short fiction story introducing key units and heroes, VERY detailed statistics etc. It's a great miss GOG didn't included it here.

Bravo GOG! Glad to see your "GOG Ltd" venture is continuing so well. I still wish you could get an audience with Activision and bring Emperor Rise of the Middle Kingdom, etc. here. :)

Oh and the AD&D games of course. Go bug Ubisoft about those.

I got this for my birthday back in 2000 on the PSX. I remember it being a hard, but rewarding game. I'm really excited to see it here, and hopefully, the Pc controls are a bit more intuitive than they were on a controller.
