How far will you go to survive?

The Long Dark, an immersive struggle for post-apocalyptic survival, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com

It's a beautiful, quiet apocalypse as humanity falls to its knees. Technological might laid to waste completely: the lights go out one last time, the electrical hum of machinery replaced by birdsong and... nothing. No energy, no food, no warmth. What does the future hold? The Long Dark is a first-person survival simulation that'll force you to think, and challenge you in unique ways: a frozen wasteland and the disinterest of Mother Nature may threaten your survival, but it's your own fear, greed, and humanity that'll become your worst enemy.
Now coming out of Games in Development, The Long Dark features a sandbox Survivor Mode as well as Wintermute – a brand new 5-episode single-player campaign. Episodes 1 & 2 are launching alongside the game, while episodes 3-5 are set for release throughout 2017 and 2018.

Let yourself weaken and any small threat may lead to your death. You have to earn the right to survive The Long Dark, DRM-free on GOG.com.

Please note that the Linux version of The Long Dark has been temporarily delayed due to technical issues. Watch this space for more info.

JavierMC: Sooo... no 10% off for GOG customers?
avatar
DedIago: well, they already ruled GOG out in 50% discount before price increase only for Steam and Humble, so why should they bother now? it seems that those DRM-freeks should be glad they are allowed to purchase the game at all.
The game was on GOG sales several times. Last time (6 weeks ago) on Summer sale at 50% discount.
Super!
Glad too see The Long Dark out of the InDev mode.
Looking forward to complete Singleplayer campaign!

AlienMind: 2017, where you can put out two fifth of a story and call it a full game.
avatar
hummer010: To be fair, no one called it a full game.
? Release: The Long Dark

Not "The Long Dark Episode 1" or somethin

I didn't realize that "Release" couldn't be episodic.

The third paragraph of the release announcement:

I'd say that's pretty up-front about it being episodic.

groze: Snipped.
As for the oh-so-usual on these forums "there's no guarantee that the rest of the game will be finished" fear-mongering slippery slope argument, I could also say there's no guarantee that my house won't burn to the ground one of these days, taking with it all of the external drives containing the backups of all my DRM-free games, so, there's no point in me -- or anyone else who lives in a house -- buying any game. Slippery slopes are stupid, it's just people dealing in hypothetical scenarios and treating them like factual truths.
Your house burning to the ground is a preposterous comparison to a company not following through with something.

groze: The Long Dark is an amazing game that has been available on GOG as in-development for a while, and even when it was in its in-dev state it was more than worth the asking price. Hours upon hours of fun (provided you like survival games, of course)
....
If you like survival games, you'll love this one, it's one of the best survival games ever made.

Starmaker: Is survival actually possible, or do you always die in the end and the goal is to go for the highscore?
What caught me about the game was the fact one review that said the game was already very enjoyable and satisfying without story mode.

For me, this was absolutely right. As a survival game in sandbox mode the point of the game is to survive. There is also a challenge mode where you are given a specifc goal such as escape the bear or prep for the blizzard, but this is an extra feature. In sandbox/survivor mode the point is to explore and survive. Expect to die a lot. Without the permadeath feature, the game wouldn't be nearly as challenging. The stakes are high and that adds to the enjoyment of the game when you manage to beat the odds and live another day. I've put 90 hours into this game and I haven't even completed the challenges or played Story Mode/Wintermute yet.

correct. but GOG Summer sale started later than price increase happened in early May. and special 'old-price-last-discount' promo never happened here. IIRC, before price increase TLD here never had 50% off at all.

Please don't ping me if you write an ad without bothering to answer the bloody question.
For those who are concerned about "only" first two episodes being released, I didn't see that anyone is mentioning that episodes 3, 4 and 5 will cost additional money. So maybe everyone who owns a game will get those as free updates. But even if those will have to be bought if they will be awesome it will feel faaaaar less a rip-off like some other really "low strikes" we have been experiencing from devs on these semi-sad days for having a "price=quality (but of course we all actually have a price<quality xD)" expectations.

On a personal note, I'm very excited about this game. Have it on Steam (payed for it 9,99€ when it was on a last sale and I don't remember when was the last time I spent that amount of money on a single game) but won't start playing it until I see few patches just to be sure (by 1st of September I'll give it a go). From start (I think it was on my wishlist for a year or so) I just had a feeling like these guys are really committed to make a great game and when I saw that awesome pre-release video the other day it felt even more satisfying that I place my trust into this piece of software that will hopefully also turn out to be a piece of art.

The best price on GOG has been $13.32, a 33% discount on the old base price of $19.99. That's 33% more than on Steam. And on GOG you had to buy the game in a much earlier development state, one and a half years ago, to get that price. The 50% discount on GOG has been after increasing the base price. You still had to pay almost twice as much as you had to pay on Steam a bit more than a month before.

Episodes 3-5 are also free.
low rated
just incase people were wondering whether the devs want to see you criticize their game and it's unpolished and unfinished state that was released so they could appease gender ideologues, the answer is no: there is nothing to criticize citizen because there is nothing wrong with this beautiful work of art that tells men they cannot understand the death of their own children the way a woman can.

First, the post was rather flamebait-ish.

Second, what are you even talking about?
