The n64 joystick used the same parts as ball mice instead of electrical contacts.
While that was better, the problem was the plastic parts grind against each other causing the problems we hear about.
Most people clean and lube,some put anti friction tape where it rubs. You could go even further and literally cut new parts out of steel if you were good with a small drill.
It interesting that most N64 FPS games used your left hand to aim which has been reversed since the xbox and PS2
