Favorite games: Some of my favorite games, in no particular order:
Half-Life
Unreal
Morrowind
Skyrim
Divine Divinity
Resident Evil 4
Quake
Batman: Arkham City
RuneScape
What games did you love but would never play again? The only game in my favorites that I can think of at the moment that I wouldn't play again is RuneScape. I played it back in late elementary/middle school, in the early to mid-2000s, and far too much. But I also had a lot more time for games back in those days, so I played it a ton then. Yet even at the point I thought it was pretty grindy. There is no way I'd be able to invest nearly as much time these days as I did then, and I wouldn't have the patience for it. And I have other games I want to get to. For the purposes of nostalgia, I may download the installer for that version of RuneScape (the game is a lot different now, from what I've seen and heard), but I wouldn't actually seriously play it.
What game would you tell friends to try out? Tough question. A fair amount of the games I like or even love I don't think the vast majority of my friends would play, like Daggerfall for example. I guess I'll go with Mirror's Edge. It's a really fun and unique game, although it is way too short, and it's probably much more accessible.
What games do/did you hate? An easy one since there was a recent one I played: Turok 2. Goodness, I despise that game. I noted some of what I felt about the game in the Games Finished in 2017 thread, so I won't go on too much about it. But the level design is infuriatingly confusing--especially when you have to backtrack--and the atrocious map does you no favors either. This was made worse by the fact that Turok, which I finished a few weeks before playing Turok 2, was a great deal of fun and the level design was great. Anytime I missed an area that I needed to go into in the first game was either my fault or easy to go find again. Turok 2, on other hand, just made it so tedious. And where you moved fast and the game was at a faster pace in the first game (along with a good soundtrack that fit well with the pace and world), Turok 2 was slow and had a mostly repetitive soundtrack (although that was partially because the levels were so damn tedious.). Did I mention I hate Turok 2?
Is there a game you keep going back to again? Or one you refuse to give up on?
I almost never replay games these days. I don't have as much time to game, and there are other games I want to get to. But Half-Life and Batman: Arkham City are two games that just find ways to pull me back. I started a 5th playthrough of Half-Life that I want to go back to later and have played through Arkham City 6 times.
Breja: Divine Divinity. I loved it like crazy, but now I have this irrational fear of going back to it and discovering it doesn't hold up, it's not as good as I remember.
I actually just played that a few months ago for the first time, and honestly I think it holds up pretty well. Not to mention it was ridiculously fun. Sure, there's definitely some dated aspects and just like any other game it isn't perfect, but I think it is a fantastic game.
